“Cornizuelos” (genus Vachellia) are common plants in the dry forest. They are recognized by the large brown spines, which are hollow and usually harbor ants inside. The plant's relationship with these aggressive ants benefits both. The plant provides a space for ants to nest and provides them with food. Ants patrol the leaves and remove eggs and herbivorous insects from the leaves, and remove other plants growing around the plant, possibly to avoid competition.
